Race Notes

A close season finale to end the 2016 season on a high!

What a tense season finale at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix! By Lap 42, the Pure Pit Wall had already predicted the correct podium finishers (HAM, ROS, VET) despite the race being so close. The MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team ended 2016 on a massive high note as they secured their eighth 1-2 finish of the season.

MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team driver Nico Rosberg was crowned World Drivers’ Champion (WDC) despite crossing the finish line in P2 behind teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Lewis started the race from pole position and led most of it as he battled to win the WDC. However, Nico was always behind him, which was all he needed to secure his first ever Formula One™ World title.

Both MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team drivers started the race with Ultra Soft tyres and then changed for a set of Soft tyres, and completed the last stint with another set of Soft compound tyres.

Throughout the 55-lap race at the Yas Marina Circuit, there were a total of 93 overtakes (28 with DRS) and Nico achieved the Fastest Pit Lane Time with a 21.2s stop. Great job ‘til the very end team!

The MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team (765) finished the 2016 season with a record number of points, and with a gap of 297 ahead of Red Bull (468). In the World Drivers’ Championship, Nico (385) was crowned champion with five points ahead of Lewis (380).
