Race Notes

What an intense Bahrain Grand Prix! Despite the ever-changing track positions, the Pure Pit Wall correctly predicted the top three finishers at Sakhir (VET, HAM, BOT).

This was the second time in 2017 that the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport drivers secured a double podium finish as Lewis Hamilton crossed the line in P2 and Valtteri Bottas was close behind in P3.

Valtteri started from pole position, his first ever in F1™, and led until his first pit-stop when an undercut from Vettel meant that the Finn came out of the pits in P2.

Both Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport drivers pitted on lap 13 as the safety car was introduced following a first corner crash.

On Lap 47, Lewis overtook Valtteri for P2 as the latter struggled with tyre pressure issues.

Contrary to last year’s three-stop winning strategy, this year’s best strategy was that of a two-stop. The winner started with a set of Super Softs, changed to another set of Super Soft tyres and then completed the last stint of the race with Soft compound tyres. It was a thrilling race which also led to a total of 48 overtakes (18 with DRS).

After the first three races, Lewis Hamilton (61) is 2nd in the Drivers’ Championship, just seven points from the top, while Valtteri Bottas (38) is 3rd. Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport (99) is just three points behind Scuderia Ferrari (102) in the Constructors’ Championship after the Bahrain Grand Prix.
