Race Notes

Lewis Hamilton gets the top spot in Spain!

What an epic battle during the Spanish Grand Prix! For the 5th time this year, the Pure Pit Wall correctly predicted the top three podium finishers (HAM, VET, RIC).

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport driver Lewis Hamilton started the race on pole position but lost the lead after the first few corners. He kept going and had a great comeback and strategy to then pass Sebastian Vettel for the lead. This was Lewis’ 2nd ever win in Spain, and his 55th career victory.

Valtteri had a very unfortunate race as he had to retire while in P3 due to a technical failure on Lap 39.

Similar to last year’s winning strategy, Lewis had two pit stops during the race. He started the Spanish Grand Prix with a set of Soft tyres. He then changed to a set of Medium compound tyres on Lap 21 and completed his last stint on the Softs.

Both Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport drivers achieved the top two Fastest Pit Lane Times with Lewis clocking a 21.5s and Valtteri just 0.1 slower. Superb stops team!

On lap 64, just two laps before the end, Lewis set the fastest lap of the race with a 1:23.593.

There were a total of 36 overtakes during this year’s Spanish Grand Prix, with 18 under the DRS and 2 for the lead.

Following this race, Lewis (98) has now closed the gap to the lead of the championship to only 6 points while a DNF from Valtteri (63) means that he remains in P3.

In the Constructors’ Championship, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport (161) have opened an eight point lead in front of Ferrari (153).
