First 1-2 finish of 2017 for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport in Canada
What a fantastic 1-2 finish in Canada! The Pure Pit Wall correctly predicted the podium finishers (HAM, BOT, RIC) in Montreal at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport driver Lewis Hamilton started from his 65th career pole position where he maintained the lead until the end of the race to take his sixth Canadian Grand Prix victory. His teammate Valtteri Bottas started from third but had a great race to finish in P2 and secure the first 1-2 finish for the team in 2017.
Lewis started the race on Ultra Soft tyres and only pitted once on Lap 32 for a set of Super Soft tyres as he drove to victory. On this last set of tyres, Lewis recorded the fastest lap, that of a 1:14.551 on Lap 64. Valtteri started on the same Ultrasoft compound tyres but then opted for a Soft tyre to complete the last stint of the race.
There were a total of 36 overtakes (24 with DRS) around the tight Montreal circuit, with five cars getting a DNF. The race also saw the Safety Car in action from laps 1-3 after a collision at the start.
Following the Canadian Grand Prix, the battle for the championship lead is now reduced. Lewis (129) is 2nd, just 12 points behind Sebastian Vettel (141) while Valtteri (93) maintains in P3.
In the Constructors’ Championship, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport (222) have once again overtaken Ferrari (214) to lead by eight points.
