Valtteri Bottas finishes P2 after a thrilling Azerbaijan GP
What an unbelievable Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Despite the numerous incidents during the race, Pure Pit Wall correctly predicted the podium finishers (RIC, BOT, STR) with three laps before the end.
The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport team started from the front row and Lewis Hamilton led up until lap 31 following an issue with his head rest.
It wasn’t an easy race for Valtteri Bottas as he collided with Kimi Raikkonen on the first lap, dropping to P18 and a lap down after having to enter the pits to change his front wing.
The safety car was deployed three times during the race, the first on Lap 13, then on Lap 17 and on Lap 20. The red flag was finally shown on Lap 22 because of too much debris on the track. As the race re-started behind the safety car, Valtteri had already worked his way up to P13 by Lap 23.
On Lap 31, Lewis was forced into the pits to fix a new head rest and found himself in P8 when he came out. By the end of the race, he managed to secure P5 and get more valuable points in the championship battle, as Valtteri just beat Lance Stroll to line to take a superb P2.
There were 137 overtakes in this dramatic race, the most of the 2017 season so far and just 25 of these were with the DRS.
Following the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Lewis (139) is 14 points off the top of the leaderboard, while Valtteri maintains P3 with 111 points.
In the Constructors’ Championship, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport now have a 24-point lead at the top.
