A thrilling start to the 2018 season in Australia
What a thrilling 2018 season opener at the Australian Grand Prix!
Lewis Hamilton started from Pole and came home in P2 at Albert Park to claim his eighth F1™ podium finish in Australia and 118th career podium. Valtteri Bottas battled from P15 on the grid to claim P8 at the chequered flag.
Both drivers got a clean getaway off the line, starting on the UltraSoft tyre. Lewis Hamilton was first to pit for the Soft tyre on Lap 19 and Valtteri switched to Softs on Lap 26.
Lewis Hamilton was leading until his pit stop, where Vettel took the lead and made a pit stop under the Virtual Safety Car on Lap 30, so was able to undercut Lewis to retain the lead of the race.
There were 15 overtakes clocked in the race, three with DRS but none for the lead as Hamilton wasn’t quite able to catch Vettel in the final laps, coming within 0.8s.
Lewis’ Fastest Lap of the race came on Lap 50 on a 1:26.444 with Valtteri’s fastest on Lap 54 on a 1:27.019. Australia’s home driver Daniel Ricciardo got the Fastest Lap of the Race with a 1:25.945.
After the first race of the season, Lewis (18) sits P2 in the Drivers’ Championship, seven points behind Sebastian Vettel (25) with Valtteri (4) in P8. Ferrari (40) lead Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport (22) by 18 points in the Constructors’ Championship.
With 20 more races to go, there is plenty to fight for in the Championships as Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport head to Bahrain.
